Art in the 1960's, like the new American society, became less conservative and more open to new ideas. New abstract paintings and pieces became well known for their symbolic value. This mimics the musical movement of the time, where more abstract song ideas became prevalent and old techniques were altered or disregarded entirely. The phychedelic era was upon us.(17)
A new artwork movement known as Pop Art, headed by Andy Warhol began in America in the 1960's, featuring paintings of iconic American symbols, including dollar bills, mushroom clouds, electric chairs,and Coca-Cola. Many of these works were controversial, influential, and reflective of the social attitude brought about by the British Invasion.(18)
