When John Lennon was sixteen he had formed a band called The Quarrymen, who played skiffle music, a genre originating in America with roots in jazz, blues, and folk music. (42) In 1957 he befriended and began playing with Paul McCartney, and in February 1958 George Harrison joined the band. Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison went on to form The Silver Beatles, who played rock and roll music, heavily influenced by both skiffle and other 1950's rock and roll music in Britain. (43) In July of 1960, the group changed their name to simply The Beatles.
The Beatles began recording at Abbey Road Studios in July of 1962, and hired Ringo Starr as a permanent drummer for the band. Their first song recorded was "Love Me Do", followed by "Please Please Me" and "P.S I Love You."(44) The Beatles' popularity in Britain grew as they began touring Britain and had their television debut later that year. The Beatles' first album titled Please Please Me was released March 22, 1963, and was huge hit, reaching number one on record charts around the country.(45) Following this great success, The Beatles went on to tour the United Kingdom three times in the next year, and were met by mobs of fans at every performance.
