History
1950-1960
During the 1950's, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger lived in the English town of Dartford. (23)They were friends and classmates at Wentworth Primary School. Eventually though, the families moved apart and it was not until the 1960's that the two met at Dartford railway station and were friends again. (24) The two would eventually meet guitarist Dick Taylor, who would later go and form the band Pretty Things, and Brian Jones and Alexis Corner playing guitar on the corner. The four would play a gig at Ealing Jazz Club where Keith and Jagger would meet the other two members. After many auditions and jam sessions, the two musicians met Ian Stewart and Charlie Watts. When asked for a band name during a phone call with Jazz News, Jones saw a Muddy Waters LP lying on the floor of which one of the tracks was "Rollin' Stone".(25)
1960-1970
In 1962, the Rolling Stones grew more and more popular. Calling themselves the Rollin' Stones", the group played their first gig on July 1962 at the Marquee Club.(26) Their first album, released in 1964 contained only one original though,"Tell Me". During their tour with Bo Diddley, the band released their third single "Not Fade Away" and watched it climb to No. 3 in the UK charts.(27) When the Stones went to the US for their american tour, they were able to write their best song yet, "It's All Over Now", which reached No. 1 in the UK charts. (28) Near the end of the 1960's, the Rolling Stones were being praised as being one of the best bands in the world, second only to the Beatles. (29)
