History
In 1962, Pete Townshend and John Entwistle started a Dixieland jazz band called "The Confederates.(31) Eventually, Entwistle met Roger Daltrey and was invited to play guitar with him and his band, the Detours. Soon after, Townshend joined as another guitar, allowing the band to play more rhythm and blues.(32) Soon, their lead singer, Colin Dawson would leave and Daltrey became the lead singer. Their drummer, Doug Sandom, would eventually be kicked out when the band sought a recording contract and were told they needed a new drummer.(33) For their tour they hired a temporary drummer until after after one show, they were approached by Keith Moon. Moon was invited to play after he accidentally smashed the drum kit when he sat in it.(34)
Soon after, the band was renamed to "The Who" and released their single "I'm the Face". Yet the single failed to reach the charts and the band looked for another way. During a performance at the Railway Hotel, Townshend broke the headstock of his guitar due to the ceiling and eventually smashed the entire guitar and grabbed another one.(35) This destructive mood would continue for weeks, when Townshend ran out of guitars and toppled the stack of Marshall amplifiers. This would go down in the top 50 moments that changed the History of Rock 'n' Roll.(36) In 1965 the Who released their first hit single "I Can't Explain." This would lead to many other singles and hit albums.
